urban picnic background
Throughout Liverpool there are pockets of derelict land. Many of these are in already blighted areas. These spaces become wastelands – eyesores that are unused and unwanted by local people. There are very few small open spaces to enjoy the view, stretch the legs, sit and rest, have a sandwich.
People need a variety of open spaces close to their home or office. With imagination and effort, derelict land or car parks can be transformed into something that enhances local environment and is valued by the community. Be they residents or office workers.
Aim:
To raise an understanding of the varied bonuses of introducing small open spaces in the city
To demonstrate uses for underused
or derelict land
To emphasise the need in a healthy city for accessible open spaces of various size
To introduce measures which would encourage a more creative use of open space
Urban Picnic is a group of Liverpool people who have come together with the aim of looking creatively at how we can transform underused or derelict land into friendly spaces and create a healthier city. We have a programme of picnics and other events often suggested by people who have dropped in to a previous picnic. Architects, artists and environmentalists share the discussions. We are all learning together.
The skills shared at the events are beginning to be used practically on some of the sites.
And now we want to find out how other people are getting on.
As a result of our practical research
we aim to provide:
A virtual space where people can share and discuss, visualise and progress ideas about the good and bad aspects of their own problem sites...
