Urban Picnic In collaboration with the Everyman Bistro, Wapping Brewery and Landlife
An event addressing the question Can we grow food within walking distance?'
Many thanks to all who took part in the event, Helen the accordionist (who all the Farmers want every market!) and the steering group of John, Richard, Julie and Paddy who created the ambience and fed us so well on local strawberries and asparagus.
The event, planned to coincide with the famous Hope St Farmers Market so that participants could Share ideas with local producers, farmers, the stall holders, chefs, the City Council, Geraud and growing enthusiasts a true celebration of all things food, with beer-tasting from Wapping brewery, strawberry teas and music.
We looked at the following questions:
Weve globalised it can we localise and enjoy it?
Yes we definitely can and we want to
Can we grow food within walking distance?
Other places do but we need help and support from the City Council
the University and practical experts
How can we make more imaginative use of our space?
Our spaces need to be more diverse places for people plants insects and animals with different things going on and lots of different plants to provide different habitats and less disease.
"when are you doing another one?
why does the council not do a map?
If they dont get a map with clear times and dates soon Ill do it myself
"Why is there no proper publicity
It is really difficult remembering when the market is every 3 weeks
I think this is the prettiest farmers market, a real tourist attraction I come over from Crosby makes my Sunday
What is local food? Some of the local food comes from a long way. Local does not mean organic
If you buy local and not organic is it better or worse for you than big air miles and organic?
It was very good for me today, I have met so many useful people I would not have known how to contact.
We will be working with several of the people I have met here
beer is not good for you yes it is it has high vitamin B6; it s like potatoes - dont have too much.
the weather has not been so good for strawberries this week but asparagus been fine.
I never thought of Cornflowers as local.
Gooseberries, rhubarb, spinach, ground elder and nettles will all grow anywhere and they all make a good meal.
Has anyone eaten pig nuts?
